Spamassassin

If I send a test message to myself from the box that is running the mail
service then spamassassin works, but if I try the same thing from another
box it doesn't work.

I had similar problems with spamassassin when using it without the daemon. After installing v3 and using it as the daemon all my problems ceased. You might look into either using it with or without the daemon, depending on your current installation and see what works
