Since there's been a fairly active discussion concerning this on the mailing list, I decided to start a poll here to let people vote on which IRC network they think an 'official' qmailrocks channel should be located on. Please make your choice and let people know what you think.

I think I'm going to set up an IRC server on the qmailrocks server itself. Any opinions?

However, if I decide not to set up the server on qmailrocks itself, it seems that freenode is winning the vote. ;)

Personally, it doesn't really matter to me where the IRC channel is. The main bitch I hear people voice is in regards to having to idle on another server, in addition to how every many other servers they already idle on.
I've used IRC for quite some time, and to be honest, if you really want to be involved in a channel, you'll go wherever it is.
I also know that having your channel located on a public server will help with its popularity, and get more people actually in it, simply because of the number of users roaming servers. I certainly understand the desire to host it locally, but is that an area you really want to devote more time to? I mean, the resources are already out there to be utilized, and you certainly wouldn't be giving up any real control over the channels if they were located on another server. Just be sure that you are the one registering them, and setting them up.
IRC servers are always under attack, and script-kiddies are _constantly_ on the lookout for 'fresh meat' to play with. After running quite a few servers myself, I can honestly say that I much prefer having my IRC channels located on someone _else's_ servers. It take a LOT of the headache away from me, and instead leaves me free to deal with more important matters.
This is just my opinion on this, as I'm not as hard-core about the whole IRC thing as some others are. I've idled on both Freenet and Undernet, just to see how things were, and from a users point of view, it really doesn't matter all that much. As long as the control of the channel is in the appropriate hands, I think all would be good.

No matter where your server is and no matter how hard you work on it , you are always going to find people that want to attack you, no matter how secure the server is or where it is located. This involves administration as well.
I have used a few different IRC Servers and the only one I would NOT suggest using is DalNet because of those Net Splits that happen with that particular server. I have had good luck with the Undernet Server and it doesn't seem to have as many problems as Dalnet. I don't know anything about FreeNode other than what people have told me about it.
