Ok my email server sits inside a private lan( has ip 192.168.1.2 ) and so i assigned the machine a hostname: server and gave all my lan machines the domain: lan

so my email server is : server.lan

well when im setting up my email server when it asks for my domain should i put in the "lan" domain or should i use a domain that i have actually registered for example ( example.org ) ??

if i do the setup with lan then when i register a domain i can just make it a virtual domain.. also if i dump one of my domains then the server won't be setup with it in all the config files.

I've never installed using a non working domain name, so I'd recommend using a real domain name. However, I am not 100% sure that a non working domain won't work, so you could also give that a try.

You should be able to do it - however, I would recommend that you set server.lan to actually point to something (maybe build a 'fake' DNS record for your internal network)

You'll have to use config-fast for qmail, rather than the normal config process, however.

On this one, I'd REALLY Read The Fine Manual, and go through all of the steps of the install.
